Washington State Cigarette Taxes Washington State ranks 3rd in the nation in rising tobacco taxes. In April of 2010, the state of Washington once again pushed up the tax another $1.40 per pack, making the overall cigarette tax $3.025 on every pack of cigarettes sold. Like other states that increase taxes on tobacco to the breaking point, they proclaim the taxes a "victory for kids," because higher prices encourage smokers to quit, and discourages young people from beginning the habit. State leaders proclaim that smoking also increases the state's health care bills, and that by using higher taxes to leverage smokers into quitting, they not only help save their lives, reduce the chances of young people enslaving themselves to cigarettes, they also cut health care costs. In Washington, like many other states, tobacco is the leading health issue, and causes the most preventable deaths and illness. Smoking related diseases kill 7,600 people annually, and cost the state nearly 2 billion dollars every year. Consider this: just the taxes on a single carton of cigarettes in the state of Washington is now $30.25! The only way to avoid these excessive taxes is to purchase your cigarettes online. USA Today declares cigarette taxes a "gold rush" for waning state budgets. The number is 800-QUIT-NOW, or 877-2NO-FUME for the Spanish equivalent. Illegal Contraband Washington State is also one of the few states that actually make it illegal to own untaxed cigarettes. If any person has untaxed cigarettes on them, they are subject to having them taken away, and forfeiting any money spent. Those persons will also be assessed a cigarette tax plus a 5% penalty along with an additional penalty of $250 or $10 per pack, whichever is greater. Having less than 50 cartons is a misdemeanor, but more than 50 cartons is considered a class C felony and may also result in jail time. Indian Sales Washington State does not interfere with federally mandated sales of untaxed tobacco products on Indian tribal grounds, however, it is only allowed between tribal members. Indians may not sell to non-tribe members without charging regular state taxes, and submitting it to the proper channels. Tax Stamps All cigarettes sold in Washington State have a tax stamp on the bottom. With the single exception of cigarettes sold on military bases where no tax is issued, packs of cigarettes sold by retailers will have a pink and blue stamp on the bottom of 20-pack, or a combination of blue/white and silver on 25 packs. Indian reservations are issued cigarettes with green and white stamps for cigarettes sold within the tribe. Cigarettes sold by Indian tribes to non-members must carry a green stamp, or some other tax stamp. Smokers wishing to quit can also find help online at the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.
